Delhi will soon see the arrival of Dussehra with the creation of a gigantic effigy of Ravana measuring 221 feet tall, after working for three months straight on this structure. The huge structure reveals the skills, planning, and teamwork that are used in building such a prominent attraction during the festival.

The festival of Dussehra, which is also called Vijayadashami, symbolises the triumph of good over evil. As per the Hindu epic Ramayana, Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Ram against Ravana, the king of Lanka. The festival is celebrated in the country through various forms of rituals, cultural activities, Ramlilas, and the tradition of burning effigies of Ravana.

Creating the gigantic structure of 221 feet in height took the collective efforts of 120 artisans, who have been working for three months together to construct the effigy. Construction of such a huge effigy requires preparation of its framework, assembly of structural elements, decorating the effigy, and preparing it for the festival.

In the absence of effigies of Ravana, the festival of Dussehra would never seem complete. It has a lot of family members who join along with devotees and visitors for this event. Lighting is an important ritual that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Many places conduct Ramlila of Lord Ram during this time.

These artists’ works are another illustration of the need for traditional craftsmanship in retaining India’s cultural festivals. Their works ensure that the communities retain their old traditions while enjoying the festival.

While Delhi is all set to witness Dussehra festivities this year, the 221-foot-high Ravana effigy is likely to grab attention due to the sheer size of the project and the hard work that went into making it.
