Congress has asked the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to explain the position of the government in light of the statement made by the head of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The matter has brought the focus of the politicians to the issue of border security, the state of affairs on the India-China border and the position of the government in regard to developments in this critical northeast state.

The state of Arunachal Pradesh is surrounded internationally by the Chinese state and is traditionally a very sensitive matter in the relations between the two nations. India regards the state to be an integral part of its territory, whereas China claims certain portions of the state. In such a scenario, any statement from any official regarding the border and the security situation naturally gains a lot of prominence.

The Congress has requested the Prime Minister to give a clarificatory statement on the remarks made by the head of ITBP. The demand for clarification by the Congress is in line with its view that the government needs to answer questions on national security and how it is dealing with the developments at the border.

The ITBP has played an important role in securing the border between India and China, especially in those areas which are at very high altitudes. The ITBP operates as an agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs and undertakes border patrolling, security-related operations, and any other assignments in the difficult terrains of the mountains.

The state of Arunachal Pradesh has been an important area of India’s engagement with China both strategically and diplomatically. Developments that happen around the border areas in this particular state have been of great significance to security agencies and policymakers because of its strategic and diplomatic importance.

The controversy arising from the remarks made by the ITBP chief has highlighted the importance of communication on issues of national security from any government official. However, any analysis of the matter will require knowledge about the exact nature of his statements and the reaction of the government to this matter.

As political discourse goes on, the emphasis will be on the stand taken by the Central Government on Arunachal Pradesh, border management between India and China, and the need to inform the general public about these developments.
