Severe rains along with heavy winds and a tornado have led to massive damage to banana plantations in Thiruvaiyaru, with about 10,000 banana plants being lost. This particular event has put farmers at a loss due to the weather disaster that took place.

These banana plantations can be found in different agricultural regions of Thiruvaiyaru, where banana cultivation is the major source of income for many farmers. Strong winds seem to have destroyed or uprooted many banana plants, while the rains had also impacted the plantation in a negative way, with the result being that plantations were left with the felled trees.

The farmers are concerned about this incident since quite some money goes into cultivating crops, which includes expenses on saplings, fertilizers, irrigation and manual labour. The destruction of banana plants may cause a great financial loss to the farmers who were going to collect and sell the bananas from their plantation.

It is noteworthy that the weather phenomenon has brought out the fragility of bananas in response to such extreme weather conditions such as windy and rainy conditions. Banana plantations have weak stem structures which easily become uprooted during periods of windy and stormy weather, especially when the ground becomes soaked with rainwater.
