Fifteen-year-old Indian shuttler Tanvi Patri scripted history by becoming the first Indian girl to reach the final of badminton in the Youth Olympic Games. What an incredible feat! It’s a huge achievement for Indian badminton and a testament to the growing potential of young Indian athletes on the world stage.
Tanvi booked her berth in the girls’ singles final beating Japan’s Yuzuno Watanabe in a thriller of a semifinal contest. The Indian shuttler showed confidence and attacking prowess to take the first game 21-14. But Watanabe fought back in the second game, winning 21-11 to take the match into a deciding third game.
Tanvi kept her nerve to come back strongly and win the deciding game 21-19 for a fine comeback. The victory assured India of its first women’s singles badminton medal at the Youth Olympic Games. Tanvi’s success is even more pertinent when considering the country’s growing ambitions in international badminton. HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen and Aditya Joshi had reached the semifinals of the badminton event at the Youth Olympic Games before, but this time Tanvi has taken the feat a notch higher by reaching the final.
The young shuttler has already made her name as a promising talent in junior badminton. She had earlier won the girls’ singles titles at the Badminton Asia U-15 and U-17 Championships in Chengdu, China, and became the first Indian player to win both the titles.
Tanvi will play China’s Yi Xin Zhang for the gold medal after her historic semifinal victory. Her journey to the finals speaks volumes about her determination, competitive spirit and rising stature in international badminton, inspiring aspiring young athletes across India.
