In a significant political event, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has quit his post on Saturday after weeks of protests by students in various parts of the country over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 exam and calls for reforms in India’s education system. The reason behind the minister’s resignation was widespread protests in Delhi and some other cities over the irregularities and for examination reforms.
Speaking about his resignation in a letter circulated on social media, Pradhan said that he had tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with due consideration to the interests of students and the nation. It is important to mention here that he did not want any unrest to affect students’ studies. He said that he had taken complete responsibility for the crisis right from its start.
The whole controversy erupted following allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination, which led the Central Government to transfer the investigation to the CBI, annul the previous test, and arrange a fresh one for over 20 lakh examinees. The government also said that henceforth all subsequent editions of the examination will be held through the Computer-Based Test (CBT) method.
Various student organizations and opposition parties had been organizing protest marches for weeks, especially at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, calling for the resignation of the minister and reforming the entire examination process.
Pradhan expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials of the ministry, and his fellow ministers for their support throughout his tenure as an Education Minister. Even though his resignation from office is a major political event, attention will soon be focused on the appointment of a new minister and reforms in the examination process.
