Who Was Tulsi in Hindu Mythology?
Tulsi, also known as Vrinda, was a deeply devoted wife and a pure-hearted woman. She was married to Jalandhar, a powerful demon king who got his strength from her faithfulness and devotion. As long as Vrinda remained loyal, no one could defeat Jalandhar — not even the gods.
The Trick Played by Lord Vishnu
To save the world from Jalandhar’s cruelty, Lord Vishnu took a clever but controversial step. He disguised himself as Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda. Believing it was her husband, Vrinda welcomed him. The moment her purity was broken, Jalandhar lost his powers and was killed in battle.

Tulsi’s Heartbreaking Curse
When Vrinda realized she had been tricked, her heart was shattered. Though Vishnu had acted for the greater good, his actions broke a sacred bond. In her deep pain and anger, Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into a black stone — the Shaligram.
Her curse was so powerful that it came true. Vishnu accepted it with grace, understanding her pain. The Shaligram stones, found in the Gandaki River in Nepal, are now worshipped as sacred forms of Vishnu.
How Tulsi Became a Sacred Plant
After her death, Vrinda was reborn as the Tulsi plant, which is now one of the most sacred plants in Hindu homes. Devotees worship both Tulsi and Shaligram together, especially during Tulsi Vivah, symbolizing the divine union of Tulsi and Vishnu.
