Delhi: There has been an earthquake of 4.9 magnitude in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday evening and it could be felt in Delhi-NCR and other regions of northern India. This earthquake took place around 10:23 pm on October 6th as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Chamoli region in an approximate depth of 13 km under the earth’s surface. The location of the epicenter of the quake according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) is 30.103°N latitude and 79.561°E longitude. This is because the tremors could be felt in a large area because of the shallow depth of the epicenter.
Some people from various areas of Delhi-NCR like Noida and Gurugram have experienced the tremors for a few seconds. Some tremors could also be felt in other regions of northern India like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
As a result of the jolt, many citizens showed worry and some even came out of their homes and buildings to ensure that everything was okay. However, there are no reports of any deaths or damage as a result of the quake. They have continued monitoring the situation in case there is any other quake that might happen.
Initially, the NCS got information about the occurrence of the quake but later confirmed the quake’s magnitude to be 4.9. The magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the amount of energy that is emitted in a particular quake, whereas the shaking at the location can differ due to various factors.
With this quake occurring recently, it reminds us of the seismic activity in the Himalayan region as well as the adjoining areas of northern India.
