Some of the opposition leaders of India such as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of Congress were briefly arrested by Delhi police in a protest march against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest march started with a march from Parliament to the offices of the Election Commission of India located in New Delhi. Some of the lawmakers of the opposition parties had raised placards and national flags along with slogans against the Election Commission. After stopping the march with barricades, the police had arrested some lawmakers after breaching the barricade.
The whole controversy arises due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. Some of the political parties in opposition to the government have expressed concern regarding this matter, stating that there can be a possibility of leaving voters who are entitled to vote from the electoral list due to lack of documents.
But on the other hand, the Election Commission has justified its decision regarding the voter list revision, stating that it was done to cleanse the rolls from duplications, deaths, and ineligible voters. The Election Commission has also ordered that steps be taken so that the eligible voters who have been mistakenly left out could be registered.
BJP has dismissed the claims made by the opposition and has charged the Congress leaders with attacking democratic bodies. The ongoing political controversy has persisted in the form of demonstrations by opposition parties, students, and youth groups.
The most recent conflict has added to the existing tension between the opposition and the Election Commission.
