Movements in international markets are likely to continue affecting domestic bullion prices. Recently, gold prices have seen pressure due to the rise in energy prices, inflationary concerns and interest rate policy expectations of the US Federal Reserve. High interest rates make it less lucrative to hold non-interest-bearing assets like gold. Currency movements and changes in global demand affect prices of precious metals.
For consumers intending to buy jewellery or make investments in gold, it would be vital to know the distinctions between various purities of gold. 24-karat gold would indicate the highest form of gold purity available in the trade, whereas 22-karat gold is popular in jewellery due to its durability. The Silver 999 consists of 99.9% pure silver and can be used as an investment tool in bar and coin forms. Consumers ought to consult their local jewellers for the current rates, as charges such as GST could apply.
