Cyclone Arnab has brought about a lot of destruction within the state of Andhra Pradesh, as the government has estimated the losses at an amount of not less than ₹4,600 crore. According to the chief minister of the state, the cyclone has caused a lot of destruction in various parts of the state.
The losses incurred are in terms of destruction of roads, electricity supply lines, agricultural lands, public utilities and other vital services. The heavy rain and strong winds from the cyclone have caused disruption of the transport system in the region and thus affected the lives of various people. The agricultural sector has been adversely affected as the standing crops in various regions have suffered a lot of damage due to waterlogging.
There have been especially adverse impacts on the coastal districts such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari, Kakinada and Krishna. Seven persons reportedly died due to the aftermath of the cyclone as informed by the Chief Minister. In Konaseema district alone, there have been around 8,000 power poles felled due to cyclone resulting in power disruption.
Aerial survey of the affected areas was conducted by the Chief Minister himself to assess the situation. In addition, he met farmers and residents of the affected area and assessed the damage to agricultural produce and properties. The government has provided monetary support to those who were affected, such as providing ₹1,500 compensation for each damaged coconut and oil palm tree. The families who returned from the relief camps were provided with 25 kg of rice and other essentials along with monetary assistance.
Further, the Chief Minister informed that the compensation to the farmers for their damaged agricultural and horticultural produce will be directly credited to the bank account after assessment. The government has made an application to the Center for additional help and reported the initial damage to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The central government teams are supposed to visit the stricken districts in order to assess independently the extent of the losses incurred. The total estimate of the losses is likely to rise after the completion of the assessment process. The main concern of the state administration is to bring back normalcy and assist those who have been adversely affected.
The government has called upon the concerned officials to fast-track the process of relief and rehabilitation, especially the coastal areas that were badly hit by the Cyclone Arnab. The next few days will be very important for the restoration of normalcy.
