India Secures 7th Place at International Mathematical Olympiad 2025 with 3 Gold Medals

Sunshine Coast, Australia – India has once again proven its mathematical prowess on the global stage by securing the 7th position at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025. Competing among 110 countries, the India math Olympiad team delivered a record-breaking performance with a cumulative team score of 193 out of 252, the highest ever by India in IMO history.

This year’s contest was held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, and marks the third time India has achieved a 7th-place ranking, matching earlier performances from 1998 and 2001. Notably, India has now placed in the top 10 seven times since its debut in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1989.

All six team members hail from different regions across India, with four students based in Delhi, showcasing the growing academic talent pool across the country.

India’s Best-Ever IMO Score and Steady Climb

This year’s 193/252 team score is not only India’s best-ever IMO performance but also marks the second time the country has secured three gold medals , the last being in 1998.

According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR, which coordinates India’s participation in international Olympiads, the nation’s performance has improved steadily in recent years. India finished 4th globally in 2024, its highest-ever rank, winning four gold medals. From 2019 to 2025, Indian students have claimed 12 gold medals, with nine earned in the last three years alone (2023–2025).

What is the International Mathematical Olympiad?

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the world’s most prestigious pre-college STEM Olympiad, attracting top student mathematicians globally. The competition consists of six complex problems covering topics such as:

  • Algebra
  • Number Theory
  • Geometry
  • Combinatorics

Each problem carries a maximum of 7 points, making the highest possible individual score 42, and a maximum team score 252. Participating countries can submit up to six proposed problems, which are shortlisted by a Problem Selection Committee in consultation with the IMO Board.

India’s performance at the IMO 66th edition not only solidifies its place among the world’s top mathematical nations but also sets a new benchmark for future participants. With the highest-ever team score, three gold medals, and a consistent climb in rankings, India’s math Olympiad journey continues to inspire a new generation of problem solvers.
