Reddit AI expansion

Reddit gears up for a bold AI expansion to challenge Google in the search engine arena: Report

In a move that could significantly reshape the digital search landscape, Reddit is shifting gears, from a popular discussion forum to an AI-powered search engine. According to recent reports from The Verge and Engadget, the platform’s CEO Steve Huffman has made it clear: Reddit wants to become a go-to destination for meaningful answers, not just conversation threads.

From Threads to Answers: Reddit’s AI Transformation

While Reddit has long been a haven for human-written insights and niche communities, the platform is now looking to harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance its utility. This strategic pivot centers around Reddit Answers, a generative AI tool launched in December 2023, designed to provide smarter, context-driven search results based on Reddit’s rich user-generated content. In just a few months, Reddit Answers has grown its user base from 1 million to a staggering 6 million weekly active users, with plans to roll out globally. It taps into LLM (Large Language Model) technology to transform how users discover advice, product reviews, and real-life experiences, essentially mimicking what many already do by appending “Reddit” to their Google searches.

Reimagining Search in a Changing Internet

We’re concentrating our resources on the areas that will drive results for our most pressing needs, improving the core product, making Reddit a go-to search engine, and expanding internationally. With 416.4 million weekly users and over 70 million weekly users of Reddit’s core search tool, the platform has a solid base to experiment with and scale this transformation.

Chris Slowe, Reddit CTO, called the initial response to Reddit Answers “very promising.” The company is betting big on the idea that online communities can become a trusted source of search results, especially as the tech industry moves toward generative AI and LLM-powered tools.

Why This Matters for the Tech Ecosystem

The change comes at a pivotal time. As Google integrates its own AI tools into Search including Gemini 2.5 Pro, AI summaries, and agentic calling Reddit is preparing for a world where traditional search engines might drive less traffic to community platforms.

By building a search experience rooted in human conversations, Reddit is not only safeguarding its relevance but also shaping the next era of consumer tech and digital transformation. Rather than simply being indexed by search engines, Reddit wants to become the search engine.

The Bigger Picture

As internet trends shift, users are increasingly looking for authenticity and context in their search results, two qualities that Reddit has in abundance. This AI push isn’t just a tech upgrade, it’s a redefinition of Reddit’s identity in the tech industry.

Whether Reddit can truly rival Google remains to be seen. But one thing’s certain: the future of search engines is no longer just about algorithms, it’s about communities, conversations, and AI that understands both.3
