C.P. Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s 15th Vice President

New Delhi, September 9, 2025: The election for vice president has occurred, and NDA-supported candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected with a clear majority. Radhakrishnan received 452 votes while opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy received 300 votes, said Returning Officer P.C. Mody. Of the 767 participating MPs, 15 ballots were invalid and hence there were 752 valid votes. One postal ballot was cancelled as the MP chose not to cast the vote. The turnout was very high at 98.2%.

Reports suggest that there was some cross-voting in support of the NDA vice president candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan. BJP leaders claimed that around 15 opposition MPs voted in his favor, even though the Congress had earlier said all 315 of its MPs would back the opposition candidate.

After declaring the results, Mr. Mody said:

“I declare C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected to the post of Vice President of India.”

With this result, C.P. Radhakrishnan becomes Vice President of India, replacing Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned on July 21. He will now take oath as the country’s 15th Vice President.

The electoral college for the vice presidential polls has 788 members in total — 245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha, including 12 nominated members. At present, the strength stands at 781 due to seven vacant seats.
