January 15th marks Indian Army Day 2026. It’s a day to celebrate the amazing qualities, sacrifices and service of soldiers of India. Celebrating the 78th Army Day, where both President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi are paying tribute, and there is a historic Army Day Parade in Jaipur that is open to the public for the first time. There are also messages of appreciation from military leaders and veterans.
Army Day marks January 15, 1949, when Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa took over as India’s first Indian Army Commander-in-Chief, taking over from the last British Commander. It was a historical milestone in India’s military history after independence.
The Indian Army’s Center of National Security
The Indian Army has always been a major contributor to India. President Droupadi Murmu publicly expressed her sincere appreciation to the Indian Army for its commitment to providing professional, courageous, and dedicated services to protect India’s borders and respond to emergencies and natural disasters. The President mentioned the success and bravery of the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter spoke of how impressed he is by all the soldiers in the Indian Army for their commitment to serving their country. He also mentioned how difficult it can be for soldiers because of the challenging conditions they face while trying to keep the country safe. Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of India. He inspired national pride and provided public support for the armed forces through his message to the nation.
On January 15, 2026, the 78th Army Day Parade was conducted in Jaipur, which marked a historic new chapter for the Army Day celebration, as this is the first time the Army Day parade was conducted outside of a military plot of land (cantonment) and held on the streets open to the public of “Mahal Road” in Jaipur. The purpose of hosting this year’s parade on “Mahal Road” was to bring the magnificence of the military to all citizens, allowing citizens to witness India’s military strength firsthand.
The parade consisted of additional events as follows:
* March Past of Indian Army contingents
* Exhibition of high-tech equipment, weapons, un-manned aerial vehicles (drones) and other defence systems
* Inaugural appearance of ‘Bhairav Battalion’, a new special operations battalion trained to conduct modern warfare tactics using drone technology.
* Display of lots of music, dance, drama, and patriotic exhibits.
* An evening programme of songs and military music called ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ featuring excellent performances and demonstrations given by both Jay Ram Singh and Gen. Upendra Diwedi.
Honoring Heroic Efforts and Supporting Communities
The Army Day celebration has become a time for honouring veterans and their families who’ve lost their loved ones to war. It has also provided an opportunity to share the stories of strength and service from throughout history and will provide a connection to all veterans throughout Chandigarh, as well as all other cities throughout India. For example, on many occasions prior to the Day, during events held at various locations, Lt Colonel Ravinder Jit Randhawa’s story inspired many through his hard work and perseverance.
In all cases, these events provide a way for the Indian Army to recognise those who have provided exemplary service, as well as provide an example of devotion, discipline, and selfless dedication that has helped shape our nation’s past, present, and future.
Why is Army Day Important?
Army Day is celebrated every year on January 15th as a way to commemorate the date in 1949 when India’s army became fully led by Indians. This celebration commemorates the following:
• The sacrifice of the soldier who defends India’s sovereignty;
• the Army’s contribution in the major conflicts and peacekeeping operations;
• its contribution during natural disasters and humanitarian crises; and
• The legacy of commitment, discipline, unity, and bravery passed through generations.
Honoring the Defenders of India
On January 15, 2026, people in India celebrate Army Day. The day is a time to reflect on the great service and sacrifice of the Indian Army and honour the brave men and women who serve in it. The President and Prime Minister of India have both shared their best wishes to the Army on this occasion. There will be a historic Army Day Parade in Jaipur to celebrate this event, as well as other events throughout India to show our veterans that we appreciate their contributions to our nation. Also, soldiers both on and off the battlefield have earned our respect for their courage and dedication to the defence of our country; they are a source of pride for us. Therefore, Army Day serves as a powerful reminder of what it means to be an Indian — to be proud, courageous, resilient, and united in defence of our homeland.
