Heavy Rains in Dehradun: Sahastradhara Flooded, Tapkeshwar Temple Damaged, Maldevta Bridge Collapses

Dehradun News Update: Last night saw heavy rainfall/which caused flash floods at Sahastradhara, Premnagar, Nanda Ki Chowki, Maldevta, and along the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. This rainfall, which showed the warning signs of a cloudburst, damaged roads, markets, and temples, so the government issued a red alert.

Two Missing from Sahastradhara Floods

As per information from District Disaster Management Officer Rishabh Kumar, two people were missing following the floods at Sahastradhara. Several shops and hotels have been lost in the Sahastradhara floodwaters. Rescue teams from SDRF and units of the fire department have been deployed and are working to identify the missing persons; however, access remains difficult due to blocked road access from debris.

Significant Damage to Tapkeshwar Temple

One of Dehradun’s most sacred places, the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, has taken a significant hit with debris and flood waters surrounding the temple premises. Debris and silt have covered parts of the temple; shops and pathways have washed away. Devotees have been requested to avoid entering near the site at present until restoration work is undertaken.

Maldevta Bridge Washes Away, All Road Access Cut Off

At Maldevta, floodwaters completely obliterated the approach bridge, rendering the area completely cut off. Videos showing the washed-out bridge at Maldevta and flooded roads in the area close to Nanda Ki Chowki and IT Park after torrential rains overnight became viral on social media.

Schools Suspended, Residents Evacuated

As the situation deteriorated, the administration of the Dehradun district has ordered the closure of all schools and informed residents living near the banks of the Tons, Song, and Tamsa rivers to stay alert. A few families were also evacuated in the areas of Premnagar and Sahastradhara as the rivers continued to rise near their establishments and residences.

Uttarakhand Rains Worsen in Mussoorie and Rishikesh.

The Uttarakhand rains have not only impacted Dehradun, but flash floods, road blockages, and water-logging have been reported in Mussoorie and Rishikesh, which have delayed rescue and relief operations.

PM Modial Reviews the Situation Regarding the Floods and Announces the Relief Package

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the flood situation in Uttarakhand and assured that the center would provide full support. He also announced a package of ₹1200 crore to help all who were affected, restore damaged connectivity, and assist in rebuilding flood-hit districts with damaged infrastructure.

Authorities on High Alert

While locals claimed that the incident was a cloudburst, officials said that the event is still being verified based on system data. Authorities have urged the public to remain indoors during heavy rains, avoid riverbanks, and follow the advisory issued by the DDRMA (District Disaster Management Authority).
