In a significant development in the Delhi car explosion incident near the Red Fort, authorities have established that the car was being operated by Dr. Umar Nabi, a Pulwama resident in Jammu and Kashmir. This was established after DNA testing confirmed similarities between samples collected from Umar’s mother with biological remains collected from the site of the explosion.
Identity Established by DNA Evidence
The explosion, which took place on November 10, 2023, had earlier been treated as a terror incident after investigations pointed to certain suspicious patterns in the lead-up to the explosion. Forensic teams collected DNA samples for analysis after they recovered charred human remains from the wreckage. On November 11, investigators took the DNA sample of Umar Nabi’s mother, and through DNA analysis, confirmed his identity without question.
Investigative officials mentioned that only Umar was believed to be inside the car when the explosion happened. He had been teaching at Al-Falah University in Faridabad, teaching medical students. A preliminary analysis also highlighted that Umar appeared to be trying to escape a police operation spanning multiple states when the explosion occurred.
Multi-State Police Action and Arrests
The Delhi Police, in coordination with forces from Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, have been conducting coordinated raids for the last two weeks as part of the investigation. Eight arrests, including three doctors, have been made and are being interrogated about possible links to extremists’ networks and finances related to the blast.
Sources indicate that the blast may have been accidental in nature relating to Umar’s escape attempt, though authorities have not excluded the possibility that it was a deliberate detonation.
Metro Station Closed Because of Increased Security
In connection with the incident, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that the Lal Quila Metro Station would remain closed until further notice because of security precautions surrounding the area. The closure is a precaution, as the Red Fort area is still under a close security cordon with increased patrolling and surveillance.
DMRC said that all other lines and stations are operating normally leaving commuters with little disruption.
