In a disturbing incident, a second-year student at Delhi University was attacked with acid by a stalker outside Laxmi Bai College in the Ashok Vihar area of northwest Delhi on Sunday. According to police, the attacker, identified as Jitender, carried out this act with the help of two friends before fleeing the scene.
According to officials, the victim, a 20-year-old woman, lives in Mukundpur and is a student at Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL). She was on her way to attend an additional class at the college when the attack happened.
“Upon inquiry, the victim stated that while she was on her way to the college, Jitender showed up on a motorcycle along with his friends, Ishan and Armaan. Ishan gave Armaan a bottle, and then Armaan threw the acid at the victim,”
said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh.
The student was able to use her hands to protect her face and suffered burns to both hands, police said. She was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, before being sent to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for treatment.
Early investigations revealed that Jitender had been stalking and harassing the victim for several months. The two lived in the same area and police said the accused had tried to approach her after she rejected him multiple times. “The victim added that there had been a heated argument between them about a month before,” DCP Singh added.
A Crime Team and forensic investigators from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examine the scene and collect evidence. Based on the statement made by the victim and medical examination, the police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including acid attack related charges, and harassment related charges.
Authorities are working to locate and apprehend the three suspects who are still at large. Various teams have been sent to several places, and the police stated that they are optimistic about being able to make arrests shortly.
The vicious assault has reopened debates about the safety of women in the national capital, particularly near college campuses. Several student organizations have called for better enforcement of anti-stalking laws and increased monitoring near schools.
