Made in India Chip to Roll Out Soon as India Pushes for Self-Reliant Technology

India is gearing up for a big milestone — the launch of its very first Made in India chip. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the news at the ‘Next-Gen Mobility for a Next-Gen City’ event, saying that six semiconductor plants in India are already being set up in Gujarat, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, these plants will start producing chips right here at home, marking a major step in electronics manufacturing in India and moving the country closer to its dream of self-reliant technology.

Vaishnaw also spoke about making Artificial Intelligence (AI) available to everyone through the India AI Mission. He explained that 34,000 powerful GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are already up and running as part of a shared computing facility for innovators across the country. The best part? The cost of using them will be less than USD 1 an hour – the cheapest in the world, he said, meaning that even small businesses, students and start-ups can take advantage of the benefits of AI and not break the bank.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke at the event, stating the importance of technology independence. He said that a digital India and Viksit Bharat, including initiatives such as a semiconductor manufacturing unit and India AI Mission will help put India on the world technology map.

PM Modi also pointed out that the Union Cabinet has just approved the country’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing facility, to be built in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with the HCL Group and Taiwan’s Foxconn.

With the rollout of the first Made in India chip now within reach, experts believe this could transform India into a major hub for advanced electronics and a key supplier of smartphones and tech products to markets like the US. More than just a manufacturing achievement, it’s a clear sign that electronics manufacturing in India is ready to take on the world.
