In a significant step to strengthen military awareness among school students, the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) is preparing two dedicated classroom modules based on Operation Sindoor—India’s decisive anti-terror operation launched against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in May 2024.
According to officials from the Ministry of Education, the initiative aims to help students understand India’s defence strategy, military preparedness, and the sacrifices of the Armed Forces in countering terrorism.
Operation Sindoor: India’s Bold Response to Terror
Operation Sindoor was launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives. In retaliation, Indian Armed Forces struck nine major terror and military installations inside Pakistan and PoK. The high-impact operation spanned four days, utilizing fighter jets, drones, missiles, and long-range artillery before a ceasefire was brokered on May 10.
Termed a continuation of India’s proactive defence posture, following the 2016 surgical strikes and 2019 Balakot airstrikes—Operation Sindoor was described by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as a mission that forced Pakistan to call for a ceasefire. He called it a “natural progression” in India’s evolving anti-terror doctrine.
What Will Students Learn?
As per NCERT sources, two special modules on Operation Sindoor are currently being developed:
- For Classes 3 to 8: A simplified, illustrated version introducing the bravery of Indian soldiers and the purpose behind the mission.
- For Classes 9 to 12: A more detailed, 8–10-page academic module focusing on the strategic aspects, technological integration, and diplomatic outcomes of the operation.
The content will highlight India’s military capabilities, decision-making during conflict, and the broader geopolitical context involving Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These will be presented through stories, infographics, timelines, and factual documentation for enhanced student engagement.
NCERT’s Vision: Real-World Education
So far, NCERT has released 16 special modules on themes such as Viksit Bharat, G20, Chandrayaan Utsav, and Nari Shakti Vandan, aiming to connect classrooms with contemporary national events. The Operation Sindoor modules are part of this evolving trend to infuse patriotic and current affairs-driven learning into the curriculum.
In the coming months, additional modules will cover Mission LiFE, the horrors of Partition, India’s rise in space exploration, and astronaut Subhanshu Shukla’s journey to the International Space Station.
Operation Sindoor in Indian Classrooms: A Strategic Shift
This curriculum update marks a larger shift toward real-time, context-based learning. With topics like India’s defence strategy, anti-terror operations, and regional geopolitics becoming part of school education, students will gain critical insights into national security. Educational experts believe that introducing topics like Operation Sindoor at the school level will foster civic responsibility, military appreciation, and a deeper connection to the nation’s core values.
The modules are expected to be officially introduced during the 2025–26 academic session, following review and integration with the existing curriculum.
