Orange Alert: IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms in Odisha on September 26-27

Bhubaneswar, Sept 25, 2025:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced an Orange Alert for multiple districts in Odisha, indicating heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high winds, on September 26 and 27 as a new weather system develops over the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates that a cyclonic circulation continues to remain over the east-central and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal, up to mid-tropospheric. As it is expected to develop into a low-pressure area in the next 12 hours, it likely develops into depression by September 26. The system is expected to move westwards and cross South Odisha – North Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of September 27, National Weather Service (NWS) indicates widespread weather perturbation across the state.

Weather Forecast and Alerts for Odisha:

Friday, September 25 (Valid till 08:30 AM, Sept 26)
Rainfall: Light to moderate rain is possible at a majority of locations in south Odisha, and many locations in North Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware):

Heavy rain, thunderstorms & gusty winds (40-50 kmph) can occur at isolated locations in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Thunderstorms with lightning and winds (40-50 kmph) can occur at isolated locations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.

In areas of similar activity, but slightly lower wind speeds (30-40 kmph) we are expecting this to impact Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Angul, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Rainfall: As for Friday, September 26 (Valid from 08:30 AM September 26 to 08:30 AM September 27). We expect widespread light to moderate rain/thundershowers across all districts of Odisha.

The following warning levels apply:

Orange Warning (Be Prepared):

We expect heavy to very heavy rainfall associated with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph) in isolated areas of Koraput and Malkangiri districts.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware):

We expect heavy rainfall and thunderstorms at one or two locations in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Kandhamal, Balasore, and Nayagarh.

We may also see similar weather impact Mayurbhanj district at wind speeds of 20-30 kmph, gusting to 40 kmph.

We expect thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph) in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Bolangir.

We expect lighter thunderstorms (20-30 kmph, gusting to 40 kmph) in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar.

Advisory to the Public and Authorities

The IMD recommends residents in vulnerable districts to keep alert and take precautionary measures during this process. They have urged local administrations to activate disaster preparedness mechanisms – especially in southern Odisha where the incoming system will impact first.

Fisher persons should not go in to the sea, as sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coasts.

As the monsoon is vigorously revived across the Bay of Bengal, residents are asked to stay tuned to official weather advisories and official instructions through local authorities.
