What is Samudra Manthan?

Samudra Manthan, or the Churning of the Ocean, is one of the most important stories in Hindu mythology. It is a tale of gods and demons working together to churn the cosmic ocean in search of Amrit—the nectar of immortality. Why Did Samudra Manthan Happen?

Once, the gods (Devas) lost their strength due to a curse. They became weak, and the demons (Asuras) started to take control of the universe. To get back their power, the gods went to Lord Vishnu. He advised them to churn the Ocean of Milk (Ksheer Sagar) to get Amrit, the nectar that would restore their immortality.

The gods couldn’t churn the massive ocean alone, so they made a temporary truce with the demons. They decided to share the nectar once it appeared. Both sides used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of serpents, as the rope.

But soon, the mountain began to sink. To save the plan, Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant turtle (Kurma Avatar) and held the mountain on his back, becoming the base of the churning.

What Came Out of the Ocean?

As the churning began, terrifying poison called Halahala came out first. It was so deadly that it could destroy all life. The gods prayed to Lord Shiva, who drank the poison to protect the world. His throat turned blue, and he became known as Neelkanth (the blue-throated one).

Then came fourteen divine treasures (Ratnas), including:

• Goddess Lakshmi – who chose Vishnu as her consort
• Airavata – the white elephant of Indra
• Kamdhenu – the wish-fulfilling cow
• Kaustubh Mani, Kalpavriksha – the wish-giving tree
• And finally, the pot of Amrit

The Trick That Saved the Nectar

The demons grabbed the pot of Amrit and refused to share. To stop them, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman. With her charm and intelligence, she distracted the demons and gave the Amrit to the gods, making them immortal once again.
