In an unprecedented and controversial move, President Trump of the U.S. has announced that the United States will “permanently pause all migration from Third World Countries” on Truth Social following an incident that has reignited discussions about the safety of people living in America and the borders of America and the direction of U.S. immigration policy. This particular incident was an alleged shooting by an Afghan national at two National Guard troopers, Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, who were stationed near the White House.
Trump’s announcement indicated a drastic shift in U.S. migration policy that has not occurred in decades. He claimed that even though technological advancements along with the economic development of America had positively impacted American society and the American economy, due to the manner in which the current immigration system, immigration policy, and all aspects of the U.S. immigration system have undermined the safety and overall stability of the United States, there needs to be a “complete recovery of the United States” from the negative impacts of Third World Countries before allowing migrants from Third World Countries into America. He has proposed to end all admissions under the Biden Administration, deport any individual who is deemed not a net asset to the U.S., cut any and all federal benefits to non-U.S. citizens, denaturalize migrants who threaten domestic tranquility and deport anyone who is a public charge, poses a threat to the safety or security of the United States, or is incompatible with Western Civilization as defined by Trump.
One of Trump’s main statements was his assertion that Biden issued many selections via the “unlawful and unauthorized Autopen method,” indicating to him that they rendered parts of the previous president’s immigration policies void. Additionally, he stressed the requirement for reverse migration (the reduction of foreign nationals) to fully address any issue.
This announcement creates a global impact. If a policy is put into effect, it will greatly affect millions in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and developing Nations. Those students that wish to study in the U.S., skilled workers applying for work-related visas, and those seeking asylum due to war or persecution will all face an immediate future of uncertainty. Additionally, nations that experience high levels of outmigration may also be impacted (economically and diplomatically) by the implementation of this type of policy.
Some supporters of this effort claim that stricter immigration policies are needed for national security purposes and to mitigate an increasing burden on our federal budget. On the other hand, objectors have stated that such policies violate international norms, hinder humanitarian assistance, and hurt America’s global standing. Moreover, attorneys have indicated that various elements of Trump’s proposed policy are likely to face significant opposition in the courts.
