October 24, 2025, Washington, D.C. — Former President of the United States Donald Trump announced late Thursday evening, he was terminating “all trading negotiations” with Canada, following anger over a “fake” and “egregious” television advertisement. The ad, airing recently in the United States and criticizing Trump’s tariffs, included a “psychologically edited” video of former President Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs. Trump argued the ad was intended to influence U.S. court rulings in regard to Trump’s trade policy.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada fraudulently used an advertisement – which is FAKE – featuring President Reagan criticizing tariffs,” Trump posted on his social media. “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED!”
Trump indicated that the ad cost approximately $75,000 and was “an effort to manipulate the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts.” He justified his tariff policies as essential to “the national security and economic strength of the U.S.A.”
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation stated it is “considering legal options” regarding the image of Reagan used without authorization, encouraging the public to view the original, unedited video of Reagan’s comments.
This news comes just two weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to diversify Canada’s trade portfolio by doubling non-U.S. exports, attributed to increasing uncertainty as published under Trump’s tariff threats.
Earlier this month, Carney met with Trump to assist in reducing trade tensions just before a scheduled review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), negotiated during Trump’s first administration but unsatisfactory after the agreement was reached.
Trade analysts caution that the policies could have major economic implications. More than 75% of Canada’s exports are sent to the U.S., with cross-border trade at approximately $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) a day.
In the meantime, Ontario Premier Doug Ford publicly endorsed the campaign, posting the video on X (formerly Twitter), and wrote:
“With the full weight of our Government, we will never stop pushing back against American tariffs on Canada. The pathway to prosperity, is working together.”
As tensions rise, formal statements from both governments are expected soon.
