Uttarakhand Cloudburst Updates: On August 5, 2025, Uttarkashi district experienced an extreme cloudburst that was followed by flash floods and left at least four dead and more than sixty feared missing.
Dharali, a busy tourist town located at 8,600 feet above sea level, was inundated with water from the Kheer Ganga river, and it resulted in the flash floods causing extensive damage to houses, hotels, shops, etc.

Observers recounted terrifying moments as vast walls of water rushed through the community. Video footage taken by properties on the3200 block of Trinity Road showed residents screaming warnings and running to safety as the water covered whole portions of market areas in minutes.
According to the district administration, at least 25 buildings, guest houses, hotels and homes, were flattened. Officials believe 60–70 people are missing or may have been caught when the buildings collapsed.
PM Modi Assures Support
After hearing the news about the cloudburst in Uttarakhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and assured him that the Centre was ready to provide full support for rescue and relief operations. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed and they are working against extreme climatic conditions and difficult terrain to rescue the survivors and recover the deceased.
Loss of Life and Property
The Uttarakhand cloudburst deaths and property losses have impacted the community immensely. Residents claimed the entire market area in Dharali is destroyed, as what used to be a bustling spot for tourists is now almost a wasteland of sludge.
Officials also indicated that more fatalities may emerge as search operations advance.
