Social activist and reformer of the educational system, Sonam Wangchuk, has stated that he is ready to give up his hunger strike provided one of the three main demands is met. This statement was made as his hunger strike continues into its 23rd day amid concerns over his health following his transfer from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital on account of health reasons. Wangchuk has accused of being subjected to “illegal detention” at Safdarjung Hospital, pointing out that there are certain limitations imposed on his movements and speech.
In a handwritten statement from Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk has mentioned that his first demand is that the Central Government accepts their responsibility for the failures of the nation’s education system especially in regards to the leak of examination papers recently.
Condition number two is that he and his fellow leaders of the CJP should be able to get into Parliament and be assured by Members of Parliament and political leaders that the concerns raised by him in his agitation would be deliberated upon in the current Monsoon session of the parliament. In case his health prevents him from going to Parliament, Wangchuk said that he would stop the fast in case some MPs and political leaders come to him at the Safdarjung Hospital and promise to raise the issue in Parliament.
His hunger strike has gained nationwide attention, with many students, activists, and public figures backing his agitation for educational accountability. At the same time, legal process relating to his treatment continues, as his wife has approached the Delhi High Court for permission to take him to a private hospital. With Parliament’s Monsoon session having commenced, everyone’s attention is focused on whether the government or political leaders heed to his conditions.
