The political furore around the leak in the NEET-UG 2026 question paper was ratcheted up another notch on Tuesday as demonstrations against the government were organized throughout India, with support from opposition parties and student organizations. Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi of the Congress Party were temporarily arrested by Delhi Police while protesting outside the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house. They were subsequently released after spending part of the day in custody.
A procession organized by Congress was meant to reach Lok Kalyan Marg, urging the government to take responsibility for the examinations’ alleged irregularities, and demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister. Other leaders and workers of the party were also arrested by police, which stopped the demonstrators from reaching the protected zone around the Prime Minister’s house.
Amidst the rising political heat, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a political organization headed by actor Vijay, lambasted the Centre for arresting opposition leaders, and restated its previous demand of doing away with the NEET examination. The party blamed the government for not addressing the students’ and parents’ concerns about the medical admission test.
Nevertheless, the Union government did not accept the opposition’s charges. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticized the Congress for turning the issue into a political one, saying that the students need solutions and not protests. The government has been emphasizing its efforts to make changes in examination procedures, in light of the controversy.
In any case, the protests have become part of a much larger campaign seeking reforms in India’s examination system. Student associations and activists continue their search for more transparency and more security measures to prevent leakages, as well as punishment for the guilty. The ongoing campaign has also gained the support of education reform activists, thereby attracting even more public attention to the matter.
