Many teachers from government schools in Himachal Pradesh have resorted to starting an indefinite hunger strike in Shimla in order to express their dissatisfaction against the state government for implementing the School Complex System in Himachal Pradesh.
This marks a huge step-up in the agitation movement by the teachers of Himachal Pradesh as they feel that the School Complex System implemented by the state government would be harmful for them as well as for the students of the state.
Huge numbers of teachers were seen taking out rallies near the state capital, raising slogans against the policy and demanding its withdrawal. Members of various teacher’s associations claimed that the School Complex System would cause transfer problems and administrative burden on teachers as well as make traveling difficult for teachers.
Through the School Complex System, the government hopes to improve coordination between nearby schools through an administrative umbrella under which the schools will fall. The government claims that the policy was adopted to help achieve proper utilization of the teachers and educational resources and improvement of the general quality of the schooling process. The officials have reiterated that this is in line with the goals of the NEP 2020.
But the protesting teachers claim that the policy has not been implemented through consultations and discussions and have demanded that the government reconsider the policy.
Indefinite Hunger Strike has caught the eye of politicians, educationists, and parents, who have shown concern about the possible disturbance of educational activities in case the deadlock continues. Teacher Unions have raised warnings that this demonstration would increase in intensity unless the demands are met.
As negotiations between the government and teachers are still under suspense, the coming days would be very important in shaping the fate of School Complex System.
