There is an extremely disturbing development in Assam due to the ongoing floods that have caused havoc in the state as 75 people have died and thousands have become homeless due to incessant rains. Large tracts of agricultural land and infrastructure have suffered major losses due to overflowing of water from various rivers.
In order to deal with this grave disaster, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a relief and rehabilitation package for the flood-hit people in the state. Under the relief and rehabilitation package, financial aid will be provided to the family members of those who have died due to the floods. There will also be compensation for those who lost houses and crops due to floods.
There are massive relief operations going on with the help of SDRF and NDRF along with the local administration to help the stranded people get evacuation and provide them with basic necessities. Some relief camps have been organized where people are provided with shelter, drinking water, food, and medical aid.
The Chief Minister has assured that the state government will prioritize the rehabilitation of those households that have been affected once the floodwater subsides. He has further instructed the authorities to ensure that relief materials are distributed at the earliest possible and damage assessment is done on time to ensure that compensation goes to the beneficiaries.
Some of the districts have been put under high alert as the water levels in the major rivers keep on rising and falling. The government has instructed the people to be on alert in case of any change in the level of the rivers and to follow the instructions provided by the local authorities regarding evacuation. The weather department has also raised an alarm regarding rain in some of the districts of the state, which could result in new floods in some of the low-lying areas.
The Assam government has requested the citizens and the voluntary organizations to come forward in this difficult situation and help out those affected.
