Following the protests by the farmers in Madhya Pradesh seeking support for their produce, the government has enhanced the procurement limit of moong crop to 60 percent. This decision is an attempt by the state government to ease the problems being faced by farmers who find difficulty in marketing their produce within the existing procurement limit.
There have been protests in various regions of Madhya Pradesh against the procurement limits where farmers have complained that many of them were not able to sell their produce at the minimum support price (MSP) as offered by the government.
In response to the above issues, the state government has raised the procurement limit which will help in selling more of the moong produce within the minimum support price system.
Moong is one of the pulses grown in large quantities in the state of Madhya Pradesh, with many farmers relying on the cultivation of this plant for their livelihood. However, issues such as volatile market prices and problems in procurement have been a source of difficulties for many farmers during the harvest period.
The hike in the procurement ceiling is considered an attempt by the government to meet the needs of the farmers and the procurement policy. It has been argued that the higher ceiling would enable smoother procurement processes and better compensation for the farmers.
Despite welcoming the policy change, farmer groups have not lost sight of their long-standing requests which include a better procurement process, timely payments to farmers and proper agriculture policies. Consistent government support has been identified as a way of helping farmers overcome difficulties that they face due to a problem in the procurement process.
This move takes place in light of ongoing discussions related to agriculture reforms, MSP policies and the process of government procurement of farm produce. Pulses such as moong occupy an important place in India’s agricultural sector.
Given the new procurement limit, the government of Madhya Pradesh is hopeful that it would be able to alleviate the plight of the farmers. But, at the same time, how effective this step would be would depend on its smooth implementation, timely procurement, and availability of benefits to the eligible farmers.
As the farmers go about looking for sustainable ways to resolve their problems related to agriculture, the latest step seems like one towards that direction.
