Tensions have escalated between the United States and Iran because of a new round of attacks that have been witnessed by both sides. Iran has used missiles in an attack on US forces located in Jordan. This was because the US had attacked the Iranian rocket launchers, located on the Larak Island adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military had attacked the two rocket launchers on Sunday. It is noted that the launchers had been preparing for the placement of naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait acts as the main oil route globally, and the US has considered the attacks to be limited.
Iran’s response came in the form of attacks against two US-based bases in Jordan. As stated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the attacks happened as retaliation against the American aggression. Meanwhile, Jordanian forces claim that their air defense systems shot down eight missiles that were fired into Jordan’s airspace. There were no casualties in the two bases, according to Jordanian officials.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump uploaded a video showing explosions in Iran’s Kharg Island, a center for exporting oil. Trump said that the island is being “blown to smithereens.” However, according to Reuters, the video was AI generated, and there was no confirmation that the island was indeed attacked in the way shown.
This new development has brought back the fear that the conflict may extend to other parts of the region. One of the areas of worry at the moment is the Strait of Hormuz since any military activities in this region might interfere with the flow of commercial ships and oil markets. Oil prices have already reacted to this situation, while the flow of ships through this area is greatly reduced.
With threats still coming from both Washington and Tehran, the outcome of this new conflict may either lead to escalation or to some period of calm.
