The postpartum period marks a significant transition in a woman’s life, beginning after childbirth or pregnancy loss. This phase is characterized by numerous physical, hormonal, and emotional changes as the body recovers and adapts. Whether following a live birth, surgical abortion, or stillbirth, the postpartum experience is deeply personal and often challenging, requiring care, support, and understanding.

What is Postpartum?

The postpartum period begins immediately after delivery and continues for several weeks as the body heals and adjusts. It’s marked by:

  • Hormonal fluctuations

  • Uterine contractions

  • Vaginal bleeding (lochia)

  • Breast changes, including milk production

  • Emotional shifts ranging from mild “baby blues” to severe depression

Physical Changes After Delivery

  1. Breast Changes – Engorgement, tenderness, and milk leakage
