Have you ever heard a man around you being told to “man up” in a very emotional situation because “men don’t cry?” Even during a common sentimental setting like a wedding or funeral, men are forced to be strong and not express themselves freely.

Most of us face problems while dealing with our emotions and expressing them openly. In my opinion, that’s pretty normal but it’s not healthy, and it’s definitely not sustainable. In the long term, it impacts our mental health negatively, and slowly steals our freedom of expression.

It is very draining to hide all your emotions because you feel scared to open up. Once in a while, we all need to let out a little steam to feel like ourselves. This applies to us men as much as anyone else. But it is a strange land for men and without directions, we can very easily be lost. So here are some tips for the strong men in your life to break out of this fear and gain back their emotional well-being:

  1. Talk it out – Have a heartfelt conversation with your close friends, your dearest family members or maybe even a therapist. Try to open up in a trusted space and release positive and negative emotions to practice vulnerability.
  1. Practice Journaling – Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal whenever you feel like you need to release them. This can also work as an alternative to talking to someone about it. This practice will help you to reflect on your emotions and find their source. It will also help you keep track of your emotional growth journey.
  2. Express Yourself Creatively – If you don’t have one already, you can try to engage in a creative hobby like painting, music, dance, or any other art form to channel your emotions. This expression will help you become more comfortable with your feelings and allow you to express them often and openly.
  3. Practice Meditation and Mindfulness – Whenever you feel over-burdened or stressed, take some moments of mindfulness for yourself. Practice a form of meditation regularly to keep your emotions balanced and your mind free of worries. Such mindful practices will help you discover yourself and learn in-depth about your emotions and thoughts.
  4. Engage in Relaxing Activities – You can take up calming practices such as yoga or stretching to release all your physical and mental stress. Take some time for yourself on a regular basis and practice self-care techniques like walking in nature or reading. These activities will help you process your emotions naturally.

You can practice some or all of these techniques to release your emotions and find the relief of emotional well-being. Make sure to practice them regularly – practising these exercises on a daily basis will help you overcome bottled-up feelings. When you start, it will be a challenge to recover from years of accumulated emotions. It can be difficult to break old patterns but healthy habits, paired with small steps and consistency can help you cross the barrier! When you learn how to express yourself easily, life becomes easier and you begin growing with it.
