Shocks from a 5.7-magnitude earthquake in Narsingdi, Bangladesh, sent strong tremors to Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal on Friday morning. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at 10:08 am at a depth of 10 km.
Residents Describe the Tremors as “Very Intense”
- Many Kolkata residents took to social media, describing the tremors as the most intense they had ever felt.
- One user said his building “shook for 30 seconds”, calling the experience alarming.
- Another resident wrote on X, “I think I just experienced the most intense earthquake of my life; Kolkata was shuddering like a fragile plastic tunnel.”
- Some said that the shaking was strong enough to wake people up from their sleep.
People Rush Out of Buildings as Precaution
- People came out of their houses and offices as a precautionary measure in Kolkata and its neighboring districts after the tremors.
- Fortunately, no injuries or major damage were reported by authorities shortly after the quake.
- Tremors Felt Across Northeast India
The earthquake was not confined to the shaking of Kolkata only, but also in:
- Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.
- Dharmanagar, Tripura
- Tura and Cherrapunjee, Meghalay
- Aizawl in Mizoram
The widespread shaking created panic in several regions, but no major incidents were reported.
Earlier in the Day, 5.2-Magnitude Quake Jolts Pakistan
In a separate incident, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan earlier on Friday. According to NCS, the epicentre was located at a depth of 135 km. Though unrelated, the back-to-back quakes across the region raised concern among residents and authorities. Monitoring Continues Seismology experts continue to monitor aftershocks and regional seismic activity accordingly. Kolkata and its suburbs are stable, but the citizens are asked to remain prepared with precautions in view of any more aftershocks.
