It is reported that a man from Bengaluru has incurred losses of lakhs of rupees as he became a victim of the cryptocurrency scam run by a woman who had befriended him via a matrimonial website. The case demonstrates the emerging trend of scammers using the internet to establish rapport with the victims, before asking them to make investments.
In this case, the man is said to have met the woman on a matrimonial site, wherein she won his trust through constant communication. Gradually, she convinced him of investing in cryptocurrency, saying it would fetch good profits within a few days.
The victim, trusting the woman, is said to have transferred money into cryptocurrency accounts as per her instructions. After making numerous investments, however, he found that he could neither withdraw his money nor get the invested amount back.
He later figured out that the investment platform and promises of good profits were fake, and reported it to the concerned authorities.
Cybercrime officers have constantly informed the general public about such investment scams in cyberspace, whereby criminals usually employ social engineering methods to manipulate their targets both psychologically and financially. Scammers always create false identities on matrimonial sites, social media, and networking sites to forge friendships and present themselves with fake investment schemes.
It is highly recommended that the users stay vigilant while dealing with the online strangers who suddenly start talking about investing or trading in cryptocurrencies. They should validate the legitimacy of the investment sites, refrain from providing any information regarding their finances, and refrain from making any financial transactions on the basis of their friendship online.
Due to an increasing number of digital fraud cases, the experts believe that being aware is very essential for the victimized users to take necessary measures. Cyber-fraud victims are advised to file complaints against such fraudsters through the cybercrime reporting system.
