Another suicide took place in a BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, in his second year on September 18, 2026. Students at the Powai campus organized a protest against this incident. The police claimed that there is an ongoing investigation of this incident.
It is reported by IIT Bombay that the student belonging to the Department of Energy Science and Engineering had uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT in search of answers. He was discovered using a mobile phone during the examination in the morning. IIT Bombay claims that there had been no disciplinary action against the student. This incident had been taken up with the concerned student by the course instructor and the Head of the Department. He was counseled and assured by them that this incident will not affect his academic career.
Later, the student returned to his hostel room, only to be discovered dead. IIT Bombay conveyed their grief over this incident and also informed that the appropriate authorities are investigating the circumstances under which this incident took place. They also assured that support is being provided to all those affected by this incident.
After the death, there was a group of students who protested on campus. It has been reported that hundreds of students attended the protest and sought answers from the management regarding the issue of student well-being and the situation surrounding the case. The examinations midway through the semester were further postponed.
Students have demanded more transparency regarding the issues associated with student well-being at the university. The police were stationed at the university as consultations continued between student delegates and the management. The police claimed that investigations are still going on.
The case has revived the issue of pressure in academics and the need for adequate support services among others in higher-learning institutions. Investigations regarding the student’s death are still ongoing.
