India on Wednesday announced initiating ‘Operation Sindhu’ to bring back Indian citizens from Iran as the Persian Gulf country’s war with Israel showed no signs of abating.
Even while India initiated the evacuation operation, reports emanated that some Indian students were injured in an attack on a medical students’ dormitory building in Keshavarz street locality in Tehran.
Iranian embassy officials in Delhi reported that the Iranian foreign ministry was in close contact with the Indian mission in Tehran after some of the students were injured. There was no spontaneous reaction to the reported incident by the Indian side.
“India gives the highest priority to the security and safety of Indian nationals abroad,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated.

Over 4,000 Indian nationals are resident in Iran and half of them are students. The MEA added that the Indian embassy in Tehran has rescued 110 Indian students from northern Iran and helped them cross over into Armenia safely on Tuesday.
The students have covered the distance by road to the capital city of Armenia, Yerevan, in the escort of Indian missions in Iran and Armenia.

The students left Yerevan on a special flight at 1455 hours on June 18 and will reach New Delhi at the early hours of June 19 in the first phase of Operation Sindhu,” the MEA added.

New Delhi expressed gratitude to the Iranian and Armenian governments for the smooth evacuation process.
Considering the worsening situation due to the persisting conflict between Iran and Israel, India has been taking all possible measures during the past few days for the security and safety of Indian nationals in Iran.
“As part of the operation, the Indian embassy in Iran has been helping large numbers of Indian nationals relocate from regions experiencing enhanced hostilities to comparatively safer regions within the nation and to then evacuate them by utilising the available and viable options,” the MEA added.
“Indian citizens in Iran should remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran via its emergency helpline, as well as with the 24×7 Control Room set up by the MEA in New Delhi,” it stated.
