New Delhi:
In a situation that seems to come from a crime-based thriller, the police in Delhi solved a mystery surrounding the death of a 32-year-old UPSC aspirant whose burnt body was found in a rental flat earlier this month. The investigation has uncovered a foreboding plot involving the victim’s partner—a forensic science student and the couple’s former partner who conspired to allow the killing and make it look like an accident.
The Shocking Discovery
On October 6, emergency service arrived at a flat in Delhi for a reported fire (which was also believed to be due to an air-conditioner exploding). When the fire was put out, police discovered a burnt body in the flat, which was later identified as Ram Kesh Meena, a civil service aspirant who had been living with Amrita Chauhan (21) the partner at the time of his death.
The situation soon raised suspicion and police investigators paid greater attention to investigate what appeared to be an accidental fire at first.
The Crime and the Cover-Up
According to investigators, Amrita — a BSc Forensic Science student in Moradabad — was alleged to have planned the murder with her ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap (27), and with the help of his friend Sandeep Kumar (29).
After killing Meena, the three would have used ghee, wine, and liquor similar to LPG gas, to set the flat on fire to destroy all evidence of their crime and claim that it was an accidental fire caused by a short-circuit.
Police state that this level of planning demonstrates “a mind familiar with the proceedings of a criminal investigation.” This may have been attributed to Amrita’s studies of forensic science.
CCTV Footage Factualizes Events
The tipping point was when police reviewed CCTV footage from the area. It showed two men with masked faces entering the premises on the October 6, around 2:57 a.m. Later, the same two men were actually seen leaving with a female just before the fire erupted inside the flat.
Police also traced Amrita’s mobile phone, which positioned her at the crime scene during the time of the incident.
The Arrests and Confession
After conducting several raids in the district of Moradabad, police arrested Amrita on October 18, who confessed during questioning. Her confession led to the arrest of Sumit Kashyap on October 21, and then to the arrest of Sandeep Kumar on October 23.
Significant evidence was also recovered, including the victim’s trolley bag, hard drive, a blood-stained shirt, and the mobile phone used in planning the crime.
A Chilling Reminder
Investigators have characterized the murder as premeditated revenge and manipulation, carried out with skill and intent to mislead investigators through illusion of evidence.
The case has sent shockwaves through the student community in Delhi, particularly among civil service aspirants, and has spotlighted the growing trend of toxic relationships, obsession, and psychological manipulation among youth.
The accused have not been granted bail and remain in police custody, and further forensic examination is happening that should help establish an accurate sequence of events that lead to Meena’s death.
