Dementia is not a normal ageing process, and it is important to detect its symptoms so that proper diagnosis and treatment can be provided, according to experts in the field of health. Even though people tend to become a little forgetful when they age, memory loss, inability to reason, and behavioural problems are usually symptoms of some other medical problem that should receive professional attention. It is recommended by experts that these symptoms should not be dismissed as a consequence of ageing.

Dementia refers to the medical condition that affects a person’s mental abilities. Some of these abilities include one’s memory, reasoning, judgment and speech capabilities, among others. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, but there are other forms such as Lewy body and vascular dementia. Dementia is a disease that slowly takes away independence, relationships and quality of life from patients. Even though it is a disease of elderly people, it does not need to be a result of the ageing process.

The symptoms at the beginning of the disease might vary from one person to another. They can consist of asking the same questions, not being able to remember new facts, being unable to concentrate during conversation, getting lost even on known streets, having trouble with money management, and with performing daily routines. Maybe some of the patients suffer from mood disorders, confusion, loss of interest in socialising or decision-making difficulties. If any of the symptoms listed above persist and have an influence on the daily routine of the patient, then he or she should visit the doctor.

It will help the patient and his/her family members to understand the causes of the symptoms and get prepared for what may happen further. The physician evaluates the memory functions of the patient, looks through his/her medical history, and orders certain tests. Some specific illnesses could cause the memory disorder, such as lack of vitamins, thyroid problems, medications’ adverse effects and sleeping issues.

While at present there is no cure for dementia, treatment and supportive care can be provided to alleviate some of its symptoms and ensure that quality of life remains relatively high. Depending on one’s diagnosis, it may include medication, cognitive and physical activities, proper nutrition and care for psychological health. Family members can also assist by maintaining consistent routines and being patient to ensure that the environment of their loved ones with cognitive disorders is safe.

There are certain healthy practices that must be followed to ensure optimal functioning of the brain and to prevent dementia. Exercise, adequate sleep, socialisation with friends and family members, doing mental exercises, and treating conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes could reduce the risk of cognitive disorders in the future. Also, good hearing and non-smoking should be maintained to stay healthy.

Nowadays, as more information about dementia becomes available, specialists say that timely assessment and appropriate care are important. Distinguishing simple forgetting from serious cognitive problems will enable individuals to receive timely care and prolong their independence for a longer period of time.
