Swine flu or Influenza H1N1 is a disease of the respiratory tract. Swine flu is a disease which is contagious as it spreads from one person to another due to the droplets of the infected individual. There are certain symptoms of flu which health professionals suggest should not be ignored, for instance, fever, cough, sore throat, body pain, and breathing problems.
According to the health department guidelines, one way to reduce risks of being infected is by making sure that he has good hand hygiene, covers his mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and avoids coming into close contact with people suffering from flu-like symptoms. The residents have been instructed to avoid using any medication of their own accord should they show symptoms of the virus.
The vulnerable categories of people which include young children, old persons, pregnant women, immune-compromised or those people with underlying diseases have been told to be cautious and follow certain preventive measures since they are highly susceptible to developing complications because of the disease.
Preventive steps in public areas including schools, offices, and all those places where there are crowds have been taken as there is a rise in the cases of infection. The individuals who are sick are asked to keep their distance from others so that the chances of spreading the infection can be reduced.
