Russian Oil Imports
There are bipartisan senators of America who have come up with an improved sanction bill
that proposes tariffs of up to 100% on the products that are coming from India and four other
nations which are still buying Russian oil. This will be a strategy employed by the United
States as a way of putting more economic pressure on Russia to help stop its war in
Ukraine.
These countries which are included in the bill as being the five largest importers of Russian
crude are India, China, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan. Previous drafts of the bill had a
tariff of as much as 500% but it has been modified into having tariffs of 100%. It has also
been narrowed down to ensure that it is acceptable to everyone. The president of America
will be able to impose or waive the tariff under certain conditions.
The sanctions for India have been proposed at a time when Russian crude has made up a
big portion of India’s oil importation after the Ukraine conflict. India insists that they have
been making oil purchases based on their own national interest regarding the security of
their energy.
In case the tariff was implemented, then it could pose major consequences for the trade ties
between the India and the United States. The increase in the tariffs on exports from India to
the U.S. would especially affect areas such as engineering products, medicines, textiles, and
chemicals, among other business ventures involved in trade. According to some experts, it
might form an important agenda in future trade and diplomatic talks between the two nations.
It is still not enacted into a law and requires to be passed by Congress in the U.S. and
receive presidential backing. The final terms may vary during its implementation process.
Despite that, the introduction of the bill illustrates the relationship between international
geopolitics, energy security, and trade.
