Environmental activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk continues his hunger
strike, losing close to 9 kilograms since starting the protest, according to reports. The
continuous hunger strike by the man has led to an increase in the health concerns regarding
Wangchuk but, at the same time, brought into light the concerns of activists for more
constitutional protection and safety in the fragile area of Ladakh.
Wangchuk, who is well known for his work in the field of sustainable development and
education, started the hunger strike in order to force the authorities to fulfill their promises in
connection with the governance and environmental conservation in Ladakh. In particular, the
activists seek to receive more constitutional protection, with the Sixth Schedule of such
protection being especially mentioned by the supporters.
According to medical practitioners who keep track of Wangchuk’s well-being, the weight loss
of Wangchuk and the influence that the continuous hunger strike has on his health are
becoming a cause for concern. Nevertheless, Wangchuk keeps going on with the protest,
claiming that it is carried out for the sake of future generations of the people of Ladakh.
The hunger strike has gotten substantial backing from environmental groups, social activists,
students, and citizens all across the country. Some have called upon the Central
Government to enter into constructive talks with the protesters and listen to the grievances of
the local population. There have been demonstrations and solidarity movements organized
in different parts of India too, owing to the increased public interest in the environmental and
governance issues prevailing in Ladakh.
The days ahead will be critical for Wangchuk, not only because he would soon lose nine
kilograms of weight but also in terms of what the authorities would do about this matter. It is
hoped that some kind of constructive discussion between the parties concerned may help in
defusing the situation while dealing with the problems of development and ecology in the
region.
