A new chapter has been added to the existing Class 9 Social Science syllabus by NCERT about the Emergency of 1975-77. It is a new addition to the already ongoing curriculum modifications under NEP 2020. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has brought about a series of changes to make learning a more all-round process that is relevant to India’s history and constitution. The addition of the new chapter is an effort towards helping students learn about a crucial phase of India’s history. Discussion of the historical and constitutional events in schools will help the learners understand more about the democratic setup in India. It will be easier to comprehend the current structures and the civic duties after learning about the events that took place in the past in the country. The period of emergency has been one of the most controversial periods in Indian politics. It is expected that discussion of the same at the school level will bring out a balanced perspective of the democratic development in the country.
With NCERT implementing the curriculum reforms in light of NEP 2020, there will be an emphasis on critical thinking skills, learning about history, and civic studies in the coming days. The introduction of the Emergency topic in the curriculum is indicative of the fact that NCERT is trying to help learners make connections with important happenings that have had a role in shaping the future of India in the last few decades.
